Beyond Suffrage:The Journey Continues

In October 2019 we launched the inaugural Beyond Suffrage Programme. One hundred and twenty brilliant young women applied, thirty were shortlisted for interview and a final twelve were selected to take part in our trustee training programme.

During the twelve weeks of training, we provided our prospective young trustees with Charity Governance and Finance training, resources and leadership development opportunities.  Action learning days were also facilitated, and the cohort had the opportunity to connect with each other, learn from leaders in the charity sector and collectively work towards securing trusteeships.

Since the training programme ended in March 2020, all but two have been placed onto charity boards and are now officially serving as trustees.

It has been a rollercoaster journey –– against the backdrop of a global pandemic, lockdown measures, #BlackLivesMatter, fears of a second wave and the impact of the pandemic on global economies looming. Against all odds, the programme has been a success, thanks largely to our charity partners, supporters and cohort.

What now?

Our London cohort are now part of a newly established Alumni Network, that will help them to develop and thrive in their new trusteeship roles.

Training young treasurer:

After months spent working with charity finance teams and helping them to navigate the challenges of Covid 19 through our accountancy service line – the need for strong finance skills on boards has once again been brought front and centre. We are therefore pleased to share that our next Beyond Suffrage programme will focus on developing young qualified accountants and training them to be treasurers on charity boards.

Supporting more young women of colour in the broader network:

We have also been working to support the other brilliant applicants who we were unable to train during the first training programme. In June we launched our Extended Programme and we're pleased that participants from our wider network have also started to secure trusteeships.

If you're a young woman of colour looking to pursue trusteeship or a charity looking to diversify your board, please sign up to our newsletter and you will be notified as soon as dates are announced and further information is published.
